So, you have a licence. What do you do next?

Firstly, you will need to check that your eyesight is adequate for driving on the road. The requirement is that you can read an old-style number plate from 20.5 metres (67 feet). The new style-style number plate was introduced in September 2001, you need to be able to read this at 20 metres (66 feet).

Learner drivers have to display 'L' plates in a visible place on the front and back of the vehicle you're driving. Our vehicles have rooftop boxes and these are displayed at all times.

After you have had a few lessons with us you may decide to practice between lessons, you will need to drive with someone who is over 21 and has held a full British licence for at least 3 years.

You will also need to make sure that you are suitably insured for the vehicle you will be driving. When you drive with us you will be covered on our insurance. If you drive with parents or friends then it is down to you to make sure you are covered on their insurance.

Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a training course specifically aimed at new drivers, designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry.

The scheme was introduced as statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years of passing their test than at any other time in their driving career.

Pass Plus will build upon your existing skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards and can help you to become more confident on the road. Pass Plus is made up of six practical modules which include:

    • driving in town
    • driving in all weathers
    • driving on rural roads
    • driving at night
    • driving on dual carriageways
    • driving on motorways

You must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an "achieved" or "exceeded" standard.
The scheme takes a minimum of six hours to complete and there is no test at the end.
